Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. Rising dramatically from the central plains, the rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka's most iconic landmark. Steeped in history and mythology, it is believed to have been used as a monastery in the 3rd century BC, and later transformed into a royal fortress by King Kasyapa.
Dambulla is renowned for its cave temple complex, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla. The temple is a vast isolated rock mass and it was here that King Valagamba took refuge in the 1st century BC. Over 80 caves were discovered in the area, with the main attractions spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings related to Gautama Buddha and his life.
